I’m hoping to find out more about my Purcell ancestors from Borrisoleigh in the 1800s. I’ll be visiting Borrisoleigh on Thursday this week. Patrick and Ellen Purcell emigrated to Sydney in 1851 with their five children. In the shipping records, Patrick’s native place and county are listed as “Borrisoleigh, Co Tipperary”. His calling says “farm labourer”. Patrick’s parents are listed as “Philip & Nelly, both dead”. Patrick’s death certificate says his father Philip was a “farmer”. I wonder if you have any record of Philip & Nelly Purcell (before 1851) or Patrick & Ellen Purcell farming in Borrisoleigh around that time? Patrick was born around 1800 or 1813 depending on whether you believe his 1875 death certificate in Sydney or his 1851 shipping records! Ellen was born around 1802 (death certificate in Sydney 1863) or 1813 (shipping records 1851). Her parents were John Fogarty and Hannah/Honora Rye. Her native place in the shipping records is “Munroe, Co Tipperary”. Patrick and Ellen had five children who came with them to Sydney: Hannah, Philip (my ancestor), John, Thomas and Patrick. Thank you in advance and if you could please point me in the right direction that would be much appreciated.
