ST PADRE PIO HEALING MASS

Our monthly St Padre Pio Healing Mass is on Wednesday,  30th September in St. Joseph’s Church, Toomevara. Rosary at 7pm and Mass at 7 30pm. All attending can venerate or be blessed with First Class Relics of St Pio, St Therese of the little flower & St Faustina. This is a very special night of prayer & healing. All are welcome.

Advent Triduum Retreat – Mon-Fri, 30 Nov-4 Dec / Mon-Fri 14-18 Dec. This guided silent retreat offers an opportunity to step away from the busyness of the season and spend time with the themes of Advent – a time of waiting, watching and preparing for the mystery of Christ’s coming.

 

Advent Weekend Retreat – Fri-Sun, 4-6 Dec. Themed around the core themes of Advent, the weekend includes time for personal prayer and reflection, prayer with others, and the opportunity to meet with a spiritual director. It is a chance to step away from the many demands of the season and make space to notice where God’s Spirit may be moving. MISSIONARIES FOR LIFE

Holy Rosary and Chaplet of Divine Mercy will be prayed for the Protection of the Unborn Child on Monday 28th September at 12 Noon, at the Monument,  the Square, Thurles. We will unite our prayers with those of Precious Life, who will be praying outside Belfast City Hall, which, contrary to the wishes of thousands of people across Belfast and Northern Ireland is being Illuminated by Belfast City Council to celebrate an ‘International day for Safe Abortion’. Please come and join us in prayer.

To celebrate the Season of Creation on Sunday 4th October, our Parish combination of Borrisoleigh/Ileigh, Templemore, Drom/Inch and Loughmore/Castleiney will hold a joint celebration at the lake in Templemore Town Park at 3pm. This year’s theme is “Living Water” There will also be a blessing of Pets Ceremony. All parishioners, choirs and musicians are invited to attend.

Members of Borrisoleigh Active Social Club Nora, Teresa, Mary, Madie, Maureen & Dolly took to the catwalk recently for the in house fashion show at Raspberry Red Boutique. Many thanks ladies

Borrisoleigh Active Social Club were off on their travels during the week.  Last Wednesday night they were guests of Raspberry Red Boutique Bruff Co. Limerick.  There was an in house fashion show with members being the models. There was great fun and a lot of purchases made. Many thanks to Jason & Ciaran and staff for their hospitality.  We’d well recommend a visit. 

The Annual Autumn trip away is happening next week.  This year the club are off to Letterkenny.  They head off on Sunday October 4th and return Wednesday October 7th.  They will tour Donegal and visit Derry. Hopefully everybody will enjoy the trip.  
Because of the Letterkenny trip the next meeting of Borrisoleigh Active Social Club takes place on Wednesday October 14th at 7pm in the Community Centre Borrisoleigh.

Adult Set Dancing Classes

Adult Set Dancing classes are taking place every Monday night in Finns Pub @ 8pm. Michael Cooney is running them. All are welcome.

Hedge Cutting

With the arrival of September hedge cutting season is now upon us. Hedgerows Ireland’s mission is raising awareness about the value and appropriate management of hedgerows; promoting the craft and profession of hedge laying; and documenting our hedgerow heritage.

Here are some top tips from Hedgerows Ireland for cutting your hedge so it retains biodiversity benefits:

  • Cut your hedge on a 2-3 year cycle in rotation, resulting in some areas producing blossom each year.
  • Delay cutting till January or February; although the restrictions on cutting are lifted in August, hedgerows are a vital source of berries for birds in Autumn/Winter. Cutting away the growing point too early in the season removes this food source.
  • Gradually reduce cutting intensity each year; cut taller and wider. 
  • Cut with a circular saw rather than a flail; this produces a cleaner cut and improves re-growth.
  • Retain a variety of hedge types.
    • Some escaped hedges that remain untopped but can be side-trimmed. If any overhanging branches become a safety hazard, a circular saw can be used to lop them off. 
    • Some topped hedges where the growing point is trimmed to a triangular profile (or ‘A roof’) from a wide base and occasional single-stem hawthorn trees are kept uncut. Keep these to at least 1.5m tall or as tall as your machinery can manage. Sloping sides on an ‘A roof’ cut allows the hedge base to access more light, which encourages denser growth that is better for ground-nesting birds. Contractors also say it’s faster and easier to cut an ‘A roof’ because you run the cutter at a 45-degree angle on both sides and move on, whereas for a flat-top cut you need to go over them a couple of times to get an even cut.
  • Do not remove hedgerows (unless they are a safety hazard or prevent tree regeneration). Even dying hedgerows support insect communities, bat roosts, and cavity-nesting birds.
