Borrisoleigh Active Social Club

Borrisoleigh Active Social Club enjoying their day out in Portarlington last Friday

Members of Borrisoleigh Active Social Club headed off last Friday to Solas Eco Garden Centre in Portarlington.  We had a very informative talk on planting of flowers and shrubs. Then headed onto Emo Court House for a guided tour which was so interesting.  We had a lovely meal in Treacys of The Heath.  As many recounted stopping there years ago coming home from matches in Dublin but since the motorway they haven’t been there.

Our next outing is to see Fran & Muriel in Bru Boru Cashel on Tuesday July 7th.
Our mystery tour takes place on Fri July 24th.  Where we’re going nobody knows (except the bus driver).

Borrisoleigh Heritage & Culture

After much effort, success has finally come in getting the relevant statutory bodies to take an interest in the preservation of the monastic ruin at Glenkeen, along with the adjoining burial ground.

The initiative is now part of the Heritage Council of Ireland’s “Adopt a Monument Programme”, which will offer mentorship and guidance on how best to proceed in securing and preserving, what is, one of the most historic of sites in, not only Tipperary, – but in all of Ireland. The Heritage Office of Tipperary County Council has also committed full support to this project.

Funding has been secured to compile a Conservation Management Plan, which is a necessary first step in a project such as this. Kilkenny based conservation specialist company, “Research & Dig”, under the management of Liam Mannix have already begun preliminary work on this plan and have visited Glenkeen on a number of occasions.

As Glenkeen monastic ruin and surrounding graveyard is perhaps the most valuable inheritance that our forebearers have bequeathed upon us, it is important that our generation do what is necessary to preserve the treasure with which we are entrusted for generations of the future.

The next step in the process is a proposed public consultation meeting. This is proposed for the evening of Thursday 16 July, with two separate sessions at 3 and at 5 o’clock. Each of these sessions will be confined to 15 people and booking will be necessary and the venue will be on site at Glenkeen

Missing white cooper helmet and hurley’s from recent community games in Limerick

To whom it may concern,

We attended the community games in UL yesterday, Maguires Pitches with Ballincollig GAA from Cork at the 11o clock match v Borrisleigh GAA.
My son Peter Downey left his white copper helmet up there with three hurley’s in it. It has his name, Peter Downey on the inside padding. He is completely distraught over loosing it. It was from his deceased grandfather and cannot be replaced. I was the manager and was doing a hundred things after the match so it’s really my fault it was left behind. We would do anything for it’s return. It’s beyond precious to him. My number is 0877738311.

We are hoping it was just picked up by mistake by one of the other teams and will turn up. We would be beyond grateful to hear back about same. We have made contact with all Community games counties involved but are hoping if we contact all GAA teams in hurling and camogie that it will come to light sooner.

Our son is suffering greatly so we are looking for any help with same.

UL do not have it so think it may also have been taken away in error. The are doing there best to recover it also.

Can this message be sent out to the participating teams group per chance and see did anyone pick it up in error?

Go raibh mile,
Tríona Downey
