Bench Marks

smart

These engravings date back to 1840/56, when the country was surveyed and mapped by the Royal Engineers of the British Army. These engineers were more commonly referred to as Sappers, – and consequently the markings are generally called, – “Sapper’s Marks”. The old Ordinance Survey map shows a proliferation of these in the parish. They were used by the engineers as points of reference to measure distances and also to record elevations above sea level. Today, with the help of aerial photography and satellites etc, map making is much more simplified but when the maps drawn up 180 years ago are superimposed on the most modern versions, except where changes to the landscape have occurred, few discrepancies are to be found.

The two “Sapper’s Marks” shown here are to be found on the pier of the entrance to Ileigh Church and on the parapet of Pallas bridge. If anyone knows of any more such marks that have survived, please email – borrishistory@gmail.com

St Joseph’s College

Clear Out your Wardrobe for the New Year and help St. Joseph’s College !

We all have items of clothing in our wardrobes that we haven’t worn in ages but just haven’t gotten around to parting with yet. Well today’s the day to pop them in a bag and drop them to St. Josephs to help raise funds for our school.

Only clean, dry clothing in good condition please. Just drop to the school between 6th and 26th Jan 2022. Thank you!
