Pave the Park Fun Finals
The Borrisoleigh Town Park is going to be a hive of activity next weekend as the Muddy Puddles Childcare sponsored Fun activities come to their conclusion. It all kicks off on Friday evening in the Sports Complex with the finals of the indoor soccer tournament where teams made up of boys and girls between the ages of four and twelve go to battle in the hope of being crowned champions of their respective age-groups.

In total, eleven finals will be played and if the action form the first day is anything to go by, we will be entertained by some thrill a minute action. The opening two games will kick-off at 6:30pm. 
 
On Friday night, we will also have the finals of our hugely popular indoor fun games. In the Ball in the Box blitz, the Cleary brother Daniel and Bobby go in as the top seeds following their outstanding performances in the qualifiers while Don Óg Kelleher and Clara Treacy will also be amongst the favourites to take the title.
 
The Hula Hoop relay race will see Laoise Cowan, Meabh Hassett and Ellie Maher start as favourites and with eight teams in the running, this should be brilliant entertainment.

Matthew Ryan is the favourite for the Tape Test while Lucy McCormack was the fastest in the Gone Fishing competition in the qualifiers. The final game of the night will be Stall the Ball where we will see the finalists try to stop the football dead on a mat after kicking it from a distance. Don Óg Kelleher and Noirín O’Donnell go into the final as the top seeds. 
 
We then turn to Sunday for the conclusion of the fun activities and just like Friday night, we will be guaranteed some rip roaring action. The outdoor fun games get proceedings going at 2pm with the Bean Bag Blitz and the Gaelic Football Shootout. The Bean Bag Blitz has 24 participants hoping to claim the fun title. Laoise Cowan and Ralfs Vilande will be amongst the favouites. Michael Conneely is the top seed in the football shootout but some of the interesting first round shootouts are juvenile GAA chairman John Butler drawn against Zac Richardson and Pauric Maher pinned against Darragh Shanahan.

The aforementioned Michael Conneely is again the top seed in the boy’s soccer slalom with Will Treacy, Cian Cowan and Cillian Butler amongst his closest challengers. Kate Maher and Niamh Keane are the top seeds in the girl’s event. 
 
Hannah Fitzpatrick and Noirín O’Donnell lead the seeding in the girls Basketball Shootout while Mikey Ralph Ryan and Aidan Feeley top the boys seeding. CJ Kirby is amongst the favourites to take the McIlroy Golf chipping competition. 
 
Emily Ryan, Grace Stapleton, Caoimhe Keane and Grace Groome were the highest scorers in the Camogie Sharpshooter while Bobby Cleary, David Rabbitte, Micheál Mulcaire and Cillian Butler are the leading contenders in the Hurling Sharpshooter. 
 
The fun games will conclude with the much anticipated Water Relay. Don’t miss it as you will be guaranteed a good laugh!!
 
At three o’clock, the finals of the camogie mini leagues will start while we will also have the opening rounds of the boy’s parish hurling leagues. 
 

Track-Attack Club Notes

Track-Attack is Back 
 
Track-Attack which is sponsored by HyGo water is back next Monday night, 21st September. We return with the new Dice Series which is the perfect way to kick start your new fitness regime. The series will include eleven Monday nights and concludes with the Dice Christmas Challenge on Sunday 13th of December. 
 
Track-Attack is a unique community based club that has a stated aim of trying to get everyone with an interest in improving their current fitness level but do it in a fun and encouraging environment. Age is irrelevant, level of fitness is irrelevant, what is relevant is your participation. 
 
All you need to do is become a member of Track-Attack and you’ll be good to go. You can do this by logging onto borrisoleightrack-attack.ie. For all existing members, adult only need to pay the series fee of €20 while kids that are already members are free.
 
If you want to become a new member, simply scroll down to half year membership and join up until the end of the year. The adult fee for this is €10 while Under 18’s are €5. Adults then pay the nightly fee of €20 and again kids are free.
 
We kickstart proceeding on Monday night next with the warm up at 7:45pm and the start whistle will go at 8pm sharp (don’t be late as we don’t wait!!). Participants can choose from three different distances namely 2km, 4km or 6km. Once you pick your distance, you must then stick with that distance for the series. We will be putting everyone into fun leagues after Monday night’s action is complete.

Victory for Peter in Charleville
Congratulations to Peter Madden who won the over 55 grade of the Charleville half marathon on Sunday last in an impressive time of 1:23:51.
Well done also to Aoibheann Carr, Donal Ryan, Andy Kinane and Ollie Carr who competed in the event.

Our monthly St Padre Pio Healing Mass is on Wednesday,  30th September in St. Joseph’s Church, Toomevara. Rosary at 7pm and Mass at 7 30pm. Hedge Cutting

With the arrival of September hedge cutting season is now upon us. Hedgerows Ireland’s mission is raising awareness about the value and appropriate management of hedgerows; promoting the craft and profession of hedge laying; and documenting our hedgerow heritage.

Here are some top tips from Hedgerows Ireland for cutting your hedge so it retains biodiversity benefits:

  • Cut your hedge on a 2-3 year cycle in rotation, resulting in some areas producing blossom each year.
  • Delay cutting till January or February; although the restrictions on cutting are lifted in August, hedgerows are a vital source of berries for birds in Autumn/Winter. Cutting away the growing point too early in the season removes this food source.
  • Gradually reduce cutting intensity each year; cut taller and wider. 
  • Cut with a circular saw rather than a flail; this produces a cleaner cut and improves re-growth.
  • Retain a variety of hedge types.
    • Some escaped hedges that remain untopped but can be side-trimmed. If any overhanging branches become a safety hazard, a circular saw can be used to lop them off. 
    • Some topped hedges where the growing point is trimmed to a triangular profile (or ‘A roof’) from a wide base and occasional single-stem hawthorn trees are kept uncut. Keep these to at least 1.5m tall or as tall as your machinery can manage. Sloping sides on an ‘A roof’ cut allows the hedge base to access more light, which encourages denser growth that is better for ground-nesting birds. Contractors also say it’s faster and easier to cut an ‘A roof’ because you run the cutter at a 45-degree angle on both sides and move on, whereas for a flat-top cut you need to go over them a couple of times to get an even cut.
  • Do not remove hedgerows (unless they are a safety hazard or prevent tree regeneration). Even dying hedgerows support insect communities, bat roosts, and cavity-nesting birds.
