THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK

“Choose faith over fear, and you’ll find miracles unfold.”

Ukraine Independence Day

Saturday, Gairdin na Saoirse was a sea of blue and yellow, as Ukrainians in our community celebrated their National Independence Day. Local men, Cory Ryan and Liam Donnelly, – along with Biddy Hurley and Teresa Ryan, performed “the miracle on the loaves and fishes”, – and fed over 100 people.

Councillor Willie Kennedy addressed the gathering and spoke on what communities can do to help people displaced by war. Ludmylia Zubok spoke about the support that her fellow Ukrainians had received among the Irish public and how much it meant to them. Talented artists, Aloyna and Ryma, both from Denipro, unveiled the mural that they created depicting the town hall of Mariupol before it was destroyed by the russian invading army.

A day of song, culture, friendship and enjoyment, was all too often interrupted by by the sad reality of war, as mothers shared of their heartache of sons, daughters, husbands and family members serving in the Ukraine army and fighting on the front line.
