Borris-Ileigh GAA Book Primary School Section

Hi all,

I’ve been tasked with compiling and writing a history of GAA activity in the primary schools, e.g. North Finals/ County Finals, Primary Game, INTO mini sevens etc.

The more recent history is fairly well documented, however older records are sparse. I don’t want to leave anyone out!

If you are aware of any noteworthy GAA related facts from 1987 to present in relation to Fantane NS, St Theresa’s GNS, St Patrick BNS or Scoil Naomh Cualán please get in contact with me at scoilnaomhcualan@gmail.com. Or you can drop photos, newspaper cuttings etc. into the school and I’ll photocopy or scan what’s needed.

I’m looking for photos of teams, photos of Primary Game representatives, write ups from finals, coaches that were involved over the years, pupils who went on to represent Tipperary in the various codes, GAA quiz winners etc.

Many thanks for your help,

Michael Small

Christmas Crib

The annual blessing of the Crib at John Connors’ premises on the Thurles Road has now become a tradition in the locality. This year the event took place on Sunday last with Fr. Gerard once again doing the honours. Friends and neighbours gathered for the occasion and this year we were privileged to be joined by some Ukrainians that are residing in the locality.

A special feature of the day was the playing of “Faith of Our Fathers” by the Delaney brothers, Timmy and Ollie, on fife and harmonica. The fife belonged to the late William Connors, a member of the local LDF, Fife and Drum Band of the early 1940s. Previous to Sunday’s event, the fife was last played well over fifty years ago when the same hymn was played by William who on that occasion was accompanied by his brother Paddy on harmonica.

The evening continued with refreshments, along with songs, recitations, stories and music. “Silent Night”, was sung in 3 languages, – Irish, English and Ukrainian, – and the singing of their National Anthem and the patriotic song of resistance, “Chervona Kalyna”, gained much appreciation from everyone present.
