NEWS SPRING – SUMMER 2026
Borrisoleigh Historical Society is now taking up 2026 memberships €20. This can be forwarded to Michael Delaney or Marie Hackett.
As avid historians, genealogists and family tracers know our country’s first census will be released very soon. The release of the 1926 Census on 18 April 2026 opens unprecedented access to the earliest demographic record of the Irish Free State. Free to access and fully searchable through the National Archives of Ireland’s new online platform, it offers over 700,000 digitised household returns.
Our next speaker Dr Noirín Higgins–McHugh will present a lecture on 22 April 8pm in the community centre on this wonderful resource and help and guide us in navigating and utilising its search tools and browsing options. A very interesting night where we will be in touching distance of a live document from 100 years ago that will reveal much about our forebears. Adm. €10 (members €5)
As promised, our historical field trip will take place locally in mid-May. We will leave Borrisoleigh by car – carpooling encouraged at this time!- reconvene with our guide, local historian John Flannery, and visit several areas of special interest to events that happened locally over 168 years ago this May. Keep in touch here over next few weeks for further information.
Bicentenary celebrations at Ileigh Church will commence in midsummer and in late July or ‘Iúil an Chabáiste’ we will remember and acknowledge the many families that left this parish for either the new world or the next world, after the Cullohill Evictions of July 1850.
Further talks are planned for the autumn with promised speakers on ‘The Cookes of Fortwilliam’ and ‘the Shop at the Cross.’
BHS welcome new members; please do contact any of our members for information.
