Ileigh Commemoration
On Sunday 15 Jan, Borrisoleigh remembered Patrick Russell, Fredrick Bourke and Martin O’Shea, on the centenary of the young men’s executions in Roscrea. After a private ceremony in Roscrea, confined to relatives of the men executed, – at the spot where the executions took place, – a large crowd attended a commemorative Mass in Ileigh church followed by a remembrance ceremony at the plot where the men are buried in the adjoining graveyard. To conclude the event, refreshments were served in the local community centre, – where Sean Hogan and John Flannery, historians of Tipperary in the Decade of Revolution, addressed the gathering. Credit for the success of this event must be given to a committee comprising of the families of the men executed, marshalled by Jim O’Shea, who personally put a huge effort into the event. He and his group were able supported by Borrisoleigh Historical Society and by Tipperary in the Decade of Revolution, who compiled and distributed a quality commemorative booklet.
