Public Health Advice & Information

It is important to remember to get your information from official trusted sources such as the Health Service Executive and the Irish Government, in particular the Department of Health and the Chief Medical Officer. Below are links to some useful information from these sources. It is also important to take a break from the constant news cycle about the coronavirus and to remember that we are all in this together.

COVID-19 Important information for Employers & Employees

Everyone needs to stay at home to help slow the spread of coronavirus. You should only leave your home to:

  • shop for essential food and household goods
  • attend medical appointments, collect medicine or other health products
  • care for children, older people or other vulnerable people – this excludes social family visits
  • exercise outdoors – within 2 kilometres of your home and only with people from your own household – keeping 2 metres between you and other people
  • travel to work if you provide an essential service – be sure to practice social distancing

For people most at risk of serious illness if they catch coronavirus, we are giving special advice called cocooning. Cocooning is for people who are extremely medically vulnerable. It is for your personal protection. This also applies to people over 70 years of age even if they are fit and well.

Cocooning means you should stay at home at all times and avoid face-to-face contact. Even within your home, you should minimise all non-essential contact with other members of your household.

Ask your family, carers or neighbours for help to ensure you have the support you need. You can also get help while cocooning through your local county council. The relevant number for Tipperary County Council is 076 106 5000.

If someone you care for needs to cocoon, share this information with them. Make sure they understand how important it is they follow this advice. This advice is in place for 2 weeks from 27 March 2020. This period will be kept under review.

ALONE has launched a national support line and additional supports for older people who have concerns or are facing difficulties relating to the outbreak of COVID-19. Professional staff are available to answer queries and give advice and reassurance where necessary. The support line is open Monday to Friday, 8am-8pm, by calling 0818 222 024. Hours may be extended to meet the demand.

Pastoral Statement from Archbishop O’Reilly

Key points:

  1. Church buildings are to remain closed until April 12th.  Apart from the fact that all are meant to stay at home,  it is practically impossible to ensure that surfaces in church buildings would be cleaned regularly, and that the numbers entering churches would be supervised.
  2. Regarding funerals, the government guidance to Archbishop Diarmuid Martin at this point is that the arrangements hitherto in place for funerals continue with small attendance and safe distancing.  Further guidance will come on Monday next.
  3. Priests or other church personnel (sacristan, cantor, volunteer) over 70 or with underlying medical conditions are not to be involved in funeral liturgies or prayers. This is in line with the regulation regarding “cocooning”.
  4. Funerals of those who die from the Coronavirus. When someone dies from the virus the public health authorities will have carried out a thorough search of everyone who had close contact with the deceased and these people will be in isolation.  They will not be at the funeral. Priests who officiate in any way at these funerals need to be extremely careful regarding public health advice (social distancing, hand-hygiene etc.).
  5. All baptisms and weddings are postponed until further notice. If, because of emergency, a baptism must be celebrated, the shortened emergency rite should be used with other ‘rites supplied later’.
