Borrisoleigh Active Social Club

Borrisoleigh Active Social Club celebrated 10 years in existence last Thursday,  commencing with Mass, thanks to Fr Hennessy, this was followed by a beautiful meal supplied by Fionnuala & her team from Meals on Wheels. A huge thanks to them & all who helped in any way in preparing the community centre for the event. We also had the assistance of Transition Year students; Amy, Aoife, Tara, Liam, David and Cody who helped serve on the day. A huge thanks to them all for their input. The meal was followed by music and songs by the old reliables, Johnny and Phil, who provided entertainment for the evening. A great afternoon was had by all.

Borrisoleigh Heritage & Culture

Borrisoleigh Heritage & Culture recently had the pleasure of providing host to our four Tipperary sister groups, — Ormond Historical Society, Cahir Social & Historical Society, Tipperary in the Decade of Revolution and Our Slieveardagh Hills. We also had the pleasure of the company of Lorna Elms and Chris Reina from the National Museum of Ireland, – along with Roisin O’Grady, Heritage Officer of Tipperary County Council.

After presentations and refreshments in the Community Centre, we visited Glenkeen and Gairdin na Saoirse, — leaving our visitors suitably impressed.

Historic Walks

A compilation of 4 historic walks of the village, hosted by our society of the course of last year, are now edited on hard drive format. At 8.00 pm on Saturday 23 May, this will be officially launched by Borrisoleigh native and former ambassador, Mr. Joseph Small. This will be preceded by an event in the Sacred Heart Church at 7.00 pm, where there will be a ceremony on the blessing of St. Cualán’s Bell Shrine.

We appeal for your support for this special, never to be repeated, occasion. Please spread the word among your friends, families and acquaintances, — and also on your social media platforms

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK

*Quote from Pope Leo XIV.*

” Brothers, sisters…

I speak to you, especially to those who no longer believe, no longer hope, no longer pray, because they think God has left.

To those who are fed up with scandals, with misused power, with the silence of a Church that sometimes seems more like a palace than a home.

I, too, was angry with God.

I, too, saw good people die, children suffer, grandparents cry without medicine.

And yes… there were days when I prayed and only felt an echo.

But then I discovered something:

God doesn’t shout. God whispers.

And sometimes He whispers from the mud, from pain, from a grandmother who feeds you without having anything.

I don’t come to offer you perfect faith.

I come to tell you that faith is a walk with stones, puddles, and unexpected hugs.

I’m not asking you to believe in everything.

I’m asking you not to close the door. Give a chance to the God who waits for you without judgment.

I’m just a priest who saw God in the smile of a woman who lost her son… and yet she cooked for others.

That changed me.

So, if you’re broken, if you don’t believe, if you’re tired of the lies…

come anyway. With your anger, your doubt, your dirty backpack.

No one here will ask you for a VIP card.

Because this Church, as long as I breathe, will be a home for the homeless, and a rest for the weary.

 God doesn’t need soldiers.

He needs brothers.

 And you, yes, you…

are one of them.”

Sister Clare Crockett

Sister Clare Crockett, an Irish religious sister died in 2016.  Her Beatification cause was formally opened at a Ceremony in January at the Cathedral of Alcala de Henares, in Madrid, Spain.  below is a documentary on YouTube in Spanish and English about her life called “All or Nothing: Sister Clare Crockett”.  Her story has amassed over 4 million views. Well worth watching.

Vyshyvanka Day

Another first for Borrisoleigh  — Gairdin na Saoirse played host to Vyshyvanka Day, – the day dedicated to the national embroidery of Ukraine. We estimate that upwards to 160 people, Ukrainian and Irish, were present for a day of song, music, good conversation and the best of food, provided by chefs par excellence, Corey and Liam.

                                                                                             ————————————————————————————————-

Hi all,

I’ve been tasked with compiling and writing a history of GAA activity in the primary schools, e.g. North Finals/ County Finals, Primary Game, INTO mini sevens etc.

The more recent history is fairly well documented, however older records are sparse. I don’t want to leave anyone out!

If you are aware of any noteworthy GAA related facts from 1987 to present in relation to Fantane NS, St Theresa’s GNS, St Patrick BNS or Scoil Naomh Cualán please get in contact with me at scoilnaomhcualan@gmail.com. Or you can drop photos, newspaper cuttings etc. into the school and I’ll photocopy or scan what’s needed.

I’m looking for photos of teams, photos of Primary Game representatives, write ups from finals, coaches that were involved over the years, pupils who went on to represent Tipperary in the various codes, GAA quiz winners etc.

Many thanks for your help,

Michael Small
