Borrisoleigh Active Social Club

We were on the road again, last Friday a group of 39 members went to Athlone on our annual Christmas shopping trip. The inclement weather did not deter us as we hit the shopping centre which is situated right in the heart of the town. Following sufficient retail therapy we headed back towards home & stopped at The Thatch in Crinkle, where we enjoyed a beautiful meal. We would like to thank Des & the team at the Thatch for their warm welcome & excellent service. Thanks also to our bus driver for the day, Jimmy!

Borrisoleigh Historical Society

Friday 28th November past, saw a large gathering attend our society’s lecture in the Community Centre. The talk, on the Convent situated on Pallas St., was delivered by Dr. Patricia Leahy Corcoran. Not only has Dr. Leahy Corcoran studied and researched extensively on the history of the building and the founding of the Mercy Order in Borrisoleigh but now, being owner of and resident in the actual building, she can speak as the ultimate authority on the subject.

So extensive and detailed has been her research and such is the volume of material she has collected, that the entire history of the convent could not be covered in one hour long lecture. We will welcome back Dr. Leahy Corcoran in the early spring to present to us the second part of her amazing research.

Borrisoleigh Community Centre

Borrisoleigh Community Centre opened its doors on March 11th 2011. The centre hosts meeting rooms, a large hall with WIFI and an 85” screen to host presentations. The large hall can cater for large groups for functions with dinners included after funeral plus various other groups. Educations is to the fore with various bodies ETB, NTDC, CE Scheme etc to re-educate people in the ever-changing rapid world especially in technology.

Two years ago, we installed an industrial kitchen with the view to providing meals for home delivery throughout Tipperary starting off with 100 meals. This has now exploded into approximately 23,000 cooked and delivered to homes in 2025 alone.

We have built a new shed 5mtrs x 5mtrs for storage. We have installed 20 solar panels with 14kw batteries, changed old lighting in the Main Hall and Kitchen over to LED. The energy cost are huge, thus the idea of going with green energy solutions. A large polytunnel has being erected to rear of the centre in order to grow fresh herbs and vegetables for use in the kitchen. Also, various cut flowers are being sown to provide floral bouquets for use in the adjoining Church. Active Retirement Group have provided a rose garden which will provide beautiful flowers for the church altar.

Each year on the 26th of December, we host a cycle, run and walk from the GAA grounds to raise funds for the community centre. Spot prizes galore and we hope you can join us even for a cup of tea and coffee. The above activities give you an insight into the running of the centre. All of which we hope to expand in the years ahead.

We would like to wish you all a happy and peaceful Christmas.

Liam Donnelly, Michael Small and Sinead Ryan.

Lecture on Ukraine

On Wednesday morning last in the Community Centre, John Connors delivered a talk on his Ukrainian travel experiences. Over six separate journeys to Ukraine since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, John has spoken with many eyewitnesses and survivors. These accounts he has documented and some have been published in his book, “Mariupol – A City Named Grief And Fear”.

His latest trips to Bucha, Irpin and Hostomel, were to the scenes of some of the most horrific war crimes imaginable. Presently, these are being documented and will be duly published.
The talk was introduced by Inna Varytska, NTDC and herself a native of Irpin. Tetiana Matvenko, an old friend who returned to Ukraine having lived among us for two years, joined us by video from her home in Kyiv.

Pat & Ann Crawford from Littleton, Anna Kravchenko from Kyiv, John Connors, Jim Moriarty, a great supporter of Ukraine, Viktoria R, now living in Holycross and Frances Maxwell, a great friend to Ukrainians living in our community.
