Regular updates with new and interesting stories. Take a look at our “derelict homestead section” and perhaps our visitors might be able to add some information to the stories of those who once lived within these walls.

The attached photo is of the Lynch family  home at Knockbrack. Prior to the Lynches, a family named Hoare resided there. Patrick Lynch had just one daughter who served on the foreign missions in Angola as did her aunt previously. The Hoare family, with the exception of Pat and his wife, Bridget, emigrated to Australia where their descendants “did quite well for themselves”.

The following poem was sent in by Liam Gleeson
Everything Seems Different, Really

Just when you thought you were normal,
It occurs right out of the blue,
A sudden strike without warning,
And not knowing what happens to you.

Then you’re found in a different position,
Having keeled over onto the floor,
It’s called a life-altering condition,
Should it happen to you no more?

I guess everything seems different, really,
Ever since your first setback occurred,
You’re awake after you thought was a minute,
Only then do they give you a word.

Please think of your medication early –
You’ll tend to forget it too soon,
Write it down and then set your alarm,
Once forgotten, you’re sure to swoon.

The results could be a bruise on the head,
Or a graze on the elbow are types,
You may every experience some shaking,
But as always, just get on with your life.

When others give you some assistance,
Make sure to thank then, do tell,
What happened to you at that moment,
Could happen to them as well.

If you consider yourself a sufferer,
Then don’t wait any longer I say,
Please make a donation to Epilepsy Ireland,
And become a member today.

Borrisoleigh Active Social Club

We had a lovely gathering in the parish centre on Wednesday 18th March to say a final farewell to our dear friend Pheenie Molloy who is leaving Borrisoleigh to move closer to her family in England, there was a great turn out & we would like to thank Kathleen Fahy for supplying confectionery & a beautiful cake for her friend Pheenie.  We wish Pheenie all the best in this next chapter of her life.

The next meeting of Borrisoleigh Active Social Club takes place tonight (Wed) April 1st at 7pm in the Community Centre Borrisoleigh.

We had a lovely day out last Friday when we took a group to Mount St Joseph’s Cistercian college Roscrea.  The weather was lovely and we were able to enjoy the walks around the college.  A good appetite was worked up so we enjoyed a lovely meal in Roscrea Golf Club on our way home.

Our Annual Progressive 45 Drive takes place on Sat April 11th @ 8pm in the Community Centre Borrisoleigh. €1000 prize fund.  All support would be appreciated and proceeds will be shared between The Irish Heart Foundation and Borrisoleigh Active Social Club.

NEWS SPRING – SUMMER 2026

Borrisoleigh Historical Society is now taking up 2026 memberships €20. This can be forwarded to Michael Delaney or Marie Hackett.

We intend to continue our monthly series of lectures through spring until midsummer with various speakers  – new and returning- and
subjects of local and Irish interest.

There are a few events to look forward to, with the 200 year anniversary of the foundation of Ileigh Church and the 176th anniversary of the Cullohill Evictions. There is also an historical excursion planned for summer with a very interesting itinerary.

Also in the pipeline are further plans and greater expansion in all things Borrisoleigh and heritage. Last year’s series of ‘Walks and Talks’ were a resounding success and there are a few memory sticks of the recording still available.

BHS welcome new members, please do contact any of our members for information.

Admission to the lecture series is €10 (€5 members)

Knitting and Crochet Group

Knitting and Crochet Group meet every Wednesday from 10.00am to 11.30am in the Community Centre.
