Borris-Ileigh GAA Club Notes

Senior:

As a famous Borris-Ileigh man once said “the famine is over” and our 29 year wait for another County Final appearance finally came to an end last Sunday evening as our first ever championship victory over our great rivals and neighbours Drom Inch booked our place in the decider for the highest honour in Tipperary Club hurling, the Dan Breen Cup. We manged to come out on top in a ferocious and tense encounter on a score line of 1-16 to 1-12 in a game which swung one way and then the other. We fell behind early on as Drom got a dream start with Joey Maher goaling after 4 minutes to give Drom a 1-02 to 0-01 lead. Our lads didn’t panic though and fought back through points from Jack Hogan, Liam Ryan and a couple of Brendan Maher frees. We grew more and more into the game as the half went and managed to take the lead just before the break going in ahead by the smallest of margins with the scoreboard reading 0-08 to 1-04 as the half time whistle blew.

We started the second half in relentless fashion showing great heart to and determination with impressive work rate some excellent possession turnovers, racing into a 0-14 to 1-06 lead halfway through the second half thanks to some excellent scores from both Conor and Niall Kenny along with an exceptional long range effort from Jerry Kelly. But as always is the way when ourselves and Drom meet this game was far from over as they came roaring back with 4 unanswered points including a Seamus Callanan point and two monster points from Johnny Ryan from way out the field to reduce the deficit to an single point going into injury time. B

ut as has been the case all throughout this year when the chips were down we as a team responded as we managed to break in behind the Drom defence with an excellent passing move working the ball into Dan McCormack who smashed the ball past the onrushing Damien Young rattling the ball to the back of the Drom net to seal the victory. A great finish to a pulsating encounter.

Commiserations to Drom Inch who fought bravely throughout and will no doubt will be back in the business end of the championship next year once again but it was Borris’s day, a huge congratulations to both management and players on a fantastic campaign. Its a just reward for all the hard work put in throughout the year. This result also means that we have reached the final of every competition we have played in this year with our North Final victory and County League division final still to come, an outstanding achievement for an outstanding group of players. The team which took to the field was as follows – Jack Bourke
Thomas Fahy, Ciaran Cowan, Matthew Stapleton
Paddy Stapleton, Brendan Maher 0-07 (0-07f), Seamus Burke
Liam Ryan 0-01, Sean McCormack 0-01
Niall Kenny 0-01, Dan McCormack 1-01, Conor Kenny 0-02
Jack Hogan 0-01, Jerry Kelly 0-02, Kieran Maher

Subs Used:
Keith Ryan, Jody Harkin, Vinny Stapleton, David O’Connor.

We now go in search of our first Dan Breen cup in 31 years as we take on giants Thurles Sarsfields in the Final on Sunday the 8th of October at 3.30pm as they chase their fourth title on the trot and their 36th in total. The game will be preceded by the Seamus O’Riain Cup Final between Roscrea and Toomevara. A tall order but nothing our lads are not capable of.
