Table Quiz – Volunteering in South Africa

TwoWeeks

MariaRyan

This October my two friends and I, all nurses, are travelling to a community called iKhethelo in the Valley of a Thousand Hills outside of Durban, South Africa with TWO WEEKS International Volunteering Network.

TWOWEEKS International Volunteer Network is an organisation that enables people with a variety of skills to volunteer on a short term basis. They provide assistance to projects already in existence around the world and aim to alleviate suffering and improve the quality of life for people in deprived areas.

During our trip we will be based in iKhethelo orphanage, which homes 43 children from the ages of 18 months to 18 years and we will be living on site with the children. While the kids go to school each day we get the opportunity to go out into the community and help in whatever way we can in the areas of health education and promotion.

We are developing a nurse education program for nurses/carers in the local hospitals and hospices, focusing on basic cares, such a hand-washing, pressure sore care and signs of infection. We will be lending a hand in the health clinics, where we will be helping with developmental checks for babies and young children. We will also be travelling back into Durban run a wound care clinic for those in need of any wound dressings.

When our days work is done, we head back to the orphanage for homework club and when all the homework is done, time for some fun! Our hope is to bring a bit of Ireland to Ikhethelo and teach the kids how to play Gaelic Football! With Tipp, Cork and Kerry women leading it, it can’t go wrong!!

I will be hosting a table quiz on the 29th of July in Stapleton’s Bar, Borrisoleigh at 9.30pm sharp to raise funds. U16’s continue the Summer League winning there second game against Roscrea last week, Scoreline of 4-06 to 1-03. Well done girls. Unfortunately we were beaten by Portroe last Sunday, but as we are second in the group we are through to a Quarter Final to be played this Saturday July 30th (away) at 7pm, more details to follow.

U13‘s played Fethard in a County Quarter final last Thursday. It was a wet evening in The Ragg and our girls though trying hard, unfortunately lost out on this one. Fantastic achievement on getting that far and topping the group.

Our U10’s had two teams competing in a blitz day organised by the County Board last Saturday. Great credit is due to Ciara Johnston (County Development Officer) and her team. These are extremely well run tournaments and a great benefit in developing camogie skill set.

Remaining County blitz days as follows:

Aug 20th and Sept 10th at the Camogie Grounds, The Ragg.

Next U8’s blitzes scheduled as follows:

August 13th & September 3rd, also at the Camogie Grounds.

It is hoped that U6’s, U8’s and U10’s will have challenge matches this Wednesday. Good luck girls.

Junior: The Junior A team will not play until August 6th against Kilruane. They will play Nenagh on 13th.
Minor: Hard luck to our minors who lost out to Moneygall/Clonakenny in a very tough and entertaining game. They will play Newport next on August 3rd where a win will see them through to a north quarter final.
